Mission
The Bird Rescue Center began as a rehabilitation center for Sonoma County’s wild native birds but has grown to service or assist 5 Northern California counties and beyond. Our mission is two-fold: to assist in the rescue, treatment, and release of injured, orphaned, or ill birds in the northern San Francisco Bay Area, and to educate the public regarding their ecological importance through our Resident Ambassador Program. The Bird Rescue Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit wildlife hospital that has serviced northern California for 40 years, providing care for approximately 3,000 birds annually that are brought to us by the public.
.Position Summary
The Wildlife Ambassador Technician II (WATII) is responsible for ensuring the daily avian care, training, and husbandry at The Bird Rescue Center. The WATII cares for our Ambassadors with the goal of maintaining standards of health and husbandry for the permanent animals in our charge. They will assist in carrying out BRC’s mission of educating the public through Ambassador presentations and participating in all aspects of the Education Program.
This individual works under the guidance of the Avian Care Raptor Supervisor and other staff members and in conjunction with consulting veterinarians and volunteers.
Responsibilities
Bird Care

Ensures animals are being handled by the volunteer team in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety protocols to minimize risk to our birds, volunteers, and the public.

Performs daily husbandry of the Ambassador Birds such as feeding, cleaning, making and maintaining equipment, enclosure repairs, enrichment, coping, etc.

Assist/Perform training and medical tasks with Ambassador Birds as assigned.

Monitoring and evaluating birds while being displayed on BRC grounds, at programs and at any special functions.

Work with staff and volunteer team to identify and address any necessary repairs and/or maintenance. Perform basic facility maintenance as needed

Maintains up-to-date and detailed records on all Ambassadors’ health, weight, care, and medical exams including both manual and electronic record-keeping.

Coordinate with medical staff, including associated veterinarian(s), for procedures, treatments, yearly physicals, or other medical care of the Ambassadors.

Reports any behavioral or medical concerns to senior staff.

Assist senior staff in creating, updating, and enforcing protocols for all aspects of Ambassador care and handling. This includes, but is not limited to, diets, housing, enrichment, behavioral assessments, treatments, training of animals, training of volunteers, and emergency situations.

Carries out enrichment and/or delegates enrichment schedule to volunteers.

Assist in ensuring all permitting protocols are carried out and abided by.
Ambassador Training

Assist in the creation and completion of behavioral assessments, individual training plans, and progression evaluation.

Assist in the development and review of educational talking points to ensure accuracy and professionalism.

Fill in as a teacher, guide or presenter for Center Tours or other programs as needed.
Administrative
-
· Assist with scheduling, basic and advanced training, skill proficiencies

Delegating daily tasks for completion

Assist with animal training and support to volunteers with the required skills.

Assist with inventory procurement and evaluations

Assist in providing analytics on program usage for internal and external audits, tracking and grant writing.

Participate in cross-training of other departments of BRC, including rehabilitation raptor care.

Represent BRC at applicable organizations, events, and other venues.

Understands organizational mission and applicable regulations and can clearly communicate these.

Other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience

· Someone who loves wildlife, can build rapport with others, and is flexible, organized, and hard-working.

Works well with and comfortable giving direction to volunteers, interns, and seasonal staff.

Must be 18 years or older.
-
Current tetanus shot(s) required.

One year’s experience (volunteer or paid) in a wildlife hospital, veterinary clinic, or related field.

4-year degree or experience in applicable subject area desired.
-
Experience teaching in a formal classroom setting for ages Pre-K to senior citizens and/or camp-type setting and/or developing Education Programs, particularly those pertaining to the environment desired.

Experience handling and/or presenting live animals in an educational setting desired, including experience working with and handling wildlife and working with raptors on the glove.

Experience with choice-based training methods

Comfortable making decisions in stressful and high-paced situations.

Must have the ability to work flexible days and hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Attention to detail, with the ability to multi-task and work under pressure.

Must be able to work independently and in a team setting.

Competent computer skills and ability to learn various data systems.

Comfortable using tools for basic enclosure repairs and improvement.

Strong written and verbal communication skills and solid interpersonal skills.

Possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license as accepted by our insurance carrier. Excellent driving record.
