Mission

The Bird Rescue Center began as a rehabilitation center for Sonoma County’s wild native birds but has grown to service or assist 5 Northern California counties and beyond. Our mission is two-fold: to assist in the rescue, treatment, and release of injured, orphaned, or ill birds in the northern San Francisco Bay Area, and to educate the public regarding their ecological importance through our Resident Ambassador Program. The Bird Rescue Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit wildlife hospital that has serviced northern California for 40 years, providing care for approximately 3,000 birds annually that are brought to us by the public.
 

Position Summary

The Clinic Assistant is responsible for aiding in daily avian care and husbandry at The Bird Rescue Center. Must be able to work individually as well as in a team, have significant communication and multi-tasking skills, and have the best interest of the animal in mind. Clinic Assistants will work directly under the Hospital Manager and Clinic Supervisors and give direction to hospital volunteers.

The position available is year-round or seasonal (spanning the length of Baby Bird Season, April through September). Weekly hours will average 24-30, with the prospect for full-time (40 hours per week) once trained.

How to Apply

Responsibilities

In accordance with organizational policies and best practices, duties include those of the hospital volunteers and phone team volunteers (as needed), as well as, but not limited to:

Animal Care

  • Assist rehabilitation personnel with examinations, treatments, fluids, and splints.

  • Assist with all daily patient rounds.

  • Assist with daily or weekly weight checks, basic physical exams, and housing progression.

  • Fulfill daily care plans for wild bird patients including, but not limited to: nutrition, feeding schedules, caging, enrichment, and medical needs.

  • Assist Clinic Supervisors in ensuring all feeding schedules are adhered to, either by directly hand-feeding baby birds or monitoring on-shift volunteers.

  • Assist with enclosure set-up and/or daily maintenance, ensuring all enrichment, cleanliness, and dietary needs are met on a species-specific basis.

  • Help ensure facilities are cleaned and maintained daily.

  • Ensure protocols to minimize risk of contraction of zoonotic disease are being adhered to and ensuring that all patients are handled in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety and biosecurity.

  • Perform basic laboratory procedures (i.e., fecal, PCV).

  • Assist with rescue, release, and transport of wildlife, if over the age of 18.

  • Assists in the coordination and release of patients as needed.
     

Administrative

  • Maintain animal care records and accurate data entry of these records.

  • In absence of admin staff or admission volunteer, may assist in:

    • Answering phones;

    • Accepting donations or selling merchandise

    • Admitting patients from the public; and/or

    • Assisting the public in person with questions.

  • Assist in updating of BRC species, medical, enrichment, and care policies as information and techniques change, as needed.

  • Provide statistics on program usage for internal and external audits, tracking, and grant writing, as needed.
     

Volunteer Management

  • Mentor volunteers and interns.

  • Delegate and ensures satisfactory completion of tasks for smooth daily operations and next-day prep.

  • Participate in the development and/or teaching of courses for volunteer continued education.
     

Other Duties

  • Have the understanding you represent BRC at applicable organizations, events, and other venues.

  • Ensure appropriate information is delivered to the public.

  • Attend staff meetings.

  • Other duties and/or responsibilities, as assigned.
     

Qualifications, Skills, and Experience

  • Someone who loves wildlife, can build a rapport with others of all ages and backgrounds, and is flexible, organized, and hard-working.

  • Must be 16 years or older.

  • Maintain current membership with BRC.

  • Maintain current tetanus shot(s) and health insurance.

  • One year’s experience (volunteer or paid) in a wildlife hospital, veterinary clinic, or related field desired.

  • 4-year degree or experience in applicable subject area desired.

  • Volunteer management experience desired.

  • Possess and maintain reliable transportation to and from work.

  • Must have the ability to work flexible days and hours and cover shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Excellent attention to detail, ability to multi-task, high degree of organization, and ability to work under pressure.

  • Ability to work with or without supervision.

  • Strong customer service skills.

  • Competent computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, and Excel.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills desired.

  • Comfortable using tools for basic enclosure repairs and improvement.

  • Ability to work in a standard office setting, sitting at a standard office desk, and to use standard office equipment, including a computer.

  • Required to consistently lift 25-50 pounds, occasionally overhead.

  • Ability to work long hours on your feet.

  • Position requires extensive standing, walking, and considerable bending, cleaning, and lifting.

  • Working conditions vary with season ranging from wet and cold to warm to hot.

  • Ability to lift and handle the variety of birds in our program.
