Mission

The Bird Rescue Center began as a rehabilitation center for Sonoma County’s wild native birds but has grown to service or assist 5 Northern California counties and beyond. Our mission is two-fold: to assist in the rescue, treatment, and release of injured, orphaned, or ill birds in the northern San Francisco Bay Area, and to educate the public regarding their ecological importance through our Resident Ambassador Program. The Bird Rescue Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit wildlife hospital that has serviced northern California for 40 years, providing care for approximately 3,000 birds annually that are brought to us by the public.
 

Position Summary

The Wildlife Technician II (WTII) is responsible for performing and coordinating daily avian care and husbandry at The Bird Rescue Center. The WTII cares for sick, orphaned or injured native wild birds with the goal of returning them to their natural habitats. This individual often works under the guidance of the Hospital Manager and in conjunction with other clinic staff members, consulting veterinarians, and volunteers.

​Responsibilities
 

Animal Care
•    Performs examinations and basic rehabilitation assessments on incoming patients
     o    Administering medications     
     o    Assisting with surgery
•    Assisting with basic treatments, such as applying splints 
•    Fulfills daily care plans for wildlife patients including, but not limited to:
     o    Nutrition, including feeding schedules, caging and medical needs.
     o    Performs weekly health checks of in-house birds, ensuring proper nutrition, housing, medication,
            enrichment, and physical therapy based upon individual treatment requirements.
•    Follows protocols to minimize risk of contraction of zoonotic disease and ensures that patients are handled in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety.
•    Perform basic laboratory procedures (i.e., fecal, blood smear, PCV) 
•    Assists senior hospital staff with patient rounds.
•    Ensures satisfactory completion of tasks for smooth daily operations and next day prep. May include delegating select responsibilities to volunteers and interns.
•    Rescue, release, and transport wildlife as needed, especially during busiest times of the year. 
•    Will be asked to perform euthanasia as needed after appropriate training and attainment of necessary certifications.


Administrative
•    Maintains animal care records and performs accurate data entry in hospital database.
•    Assists in updating of BRC species, medical, enrichment, and care policies as information and techniques change.
•    In absence of admin or volunteer may assist in:
     o    Answering phones; accepting donations or selling merchandise.
     o    Admitting patients from the public and/or assisting the public in person with questions 
•    Attends regular staff meetings and trainings.
•    Understands organizational mission and applicable regulations and can clearly communicate these to the public.
•    Other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience
•    Works well with and comfortable giving direction to volunteers, interns, young adults, and seasonal staff.
•    Current tetanus shot(s) required and health insurance strongly recommended. 
•    4-year degree or experience in applicable subject area desired
•    Minimum one year experience (volunteer or paid) in a wildlife hospital, vet clinic, or related field
•    Must be 18 years or older. 
•    Possess or maintain reliable transportation to and from work.  
•    Must have the ability to work flexible days and hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, especially during busy seasonal times.
•    Comfortable making triage decisions in stressful and high-paced situations. 
•    Attention to detail, with the ability to multi-task and work under pressure.
•    Competent computer skills. 
•    Strong written and verbal communication skills and solid interpersonal skills.
•    Comfortable using tools for basic enclosure repairs and improvement.
•    Must be able to work individually without supervision and in a team setting

The work environment and the physical requirements described are representative of those an employee will encounter and will need to meet to successfully perform the essential duties and key responsibilities of this position. •    Ability to work in a standard office setting, sitting at a standard office desk, and to use standard office equipment, including a computer 
•    Required to consistently lift 25-50 pounds, occasionally overhead;
•    Ability to work long hours on your feet. 
•    Position requires extensive standing, walking, and considerable bending, cleaning, and lifting 
•    Working conditions vary with season ranging from wet and cold to warm to hot.
•    Ability to lift and handle the variety of birds in our program.
•    Comfortable and willing to work in close quarters and proximity to staff and volunteers.
