Responsibilities

In accordance with organizational policies and best practices, duties include those of the hospital volunteers and phone team volunteers (as needed), as well as, but not limited to:
 

Animal Care

• Performs examinations and basic rehabilitation assessments on incoming patients

  • Administering medical treatments, fluids, and splints

  • Assisting with treatments and surgery; monitoring patients under anesthesia

• Fulfilling daily care plans for wildlife patients including, but not limited to:

  • Nutrition, including feeding schedules, caging and medical needs.

  • Ensures caging and facilities are cleaned and maintained daily

• Performs weekly health checks of in-house birds, ensuring proper nutrition, housing, medication, enrichment, and physical therapy based upon individual treatment requirements.

• Ensure protocols to minimize risk of contraction of zoonotic disease are being adhered to and ensuring that patients are handled in a manner that maximizes human and animal safety.

• Performing laboratory procedures (i.e., fecal, blood draw, blood smear, PCV)

• Performing euthanasia in accordance with The Bird Rescue Center, Fish and Wildlife, and best practices regulations.

• Rescue, release, and transport wildlife as needed.

  • Assists in the coordination and release of patients as needed.

• Assist with construction or acquisition of all needed items for environment, housing, or enrichment.

• Assisting the Rehabilitation Hospital Manager/ED and Veterinarian with patient rounds.
   

Administrative

• Maintains animal care records and accurate data entry of these records.

• Assist in updating of BRC species, medical, enrichment, and care policies as info and techniques change.

• In absence of admin or volunteer may assist in:

  • Answering phones; accepting donations or selling merchandise.

  • Admitting patients from the public and/or assisting the public in person with questions

  • Provide statistics on program usage for internal and external audits, tracking, and grant writing.
     

Volunteer Management.

• Supervises, trains, and mentors volunteers, interns, and seasonal staff.

• Delegates and ensures satisfactory completion of tasks for smooth daily operations and next day prep.

• Participate in the development and/or teaching of courses for volunteer continued education.
   

Other Duties

• Represent BRC at applicable organizations, events, and other venues.

• Ensure appropriate information is delivered to the public.

• Attend staff meetings.

• Other duties and/or responsibilities as assigned
   

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• Someone who loves nature, enjoys teaching, has a rapport with children, and is flexible and organized.

• Maintain current membership with The BRC.

• Maintain current tetanus shot(s) and health insurance.

• 4-year degree or experience in applicable subject area desired

• Minimum one year experience (volunteer or paid) in a wildlife hospital, vet clinic, or related field desired

• Must be 18 years or older.

• Possess and maintain a current, valid California driver license as accepted by our insurance carrier. Must maintain reliable transportation and an excellent driving record

• Must have the ability to work flexible days and hours and cover shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Comfortable making triage decisions in stressful and high-paced situations.

• Attention to detail, ability to multi-task and work under pressure.

• Ability to work without supervision.

• Strong customer service skills

• Competent computer skills and knowledge of Microsoft Office, PowerPoint, and Excel

• Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills desired

• Experience desired in developing or managing Environmental/Education Programs or protocols.

• Comfortable using tools for basic enclosure repairs and improvement.

• Volunteer management experience desired.

• Ability to work in a standard office setting, sitting at a standard office desk, and to use standard office equipment, including a computer

• Required to consistently lift 25-50 pounds, occasionally overhead.

• Ability to work long hours on your feet.

• Position requires extensive standing, walking, and considerable bending, cleaning, and lifting.

• Working conditions vary with season ranging from wet and cold to warm to hot.

• Ability to lift and handle the variety of birds in our program.
